Primetime Awards Nominees for August 2012

 

This week, primetime soaps have been heating up. But with all the shows in primetime for both Kapamilya and Kapuso, there are four that stand out and we list them down according to quality.

1) Walang Hanggan
Almost everyone's hooked to this. When it started, it seemed as if it was a declaration, a claiming in the wind that this show would indeed be everlasting. True enough, it looks like it won't end after all. Even as it was extended for a longer time, the way the show gets people glued at their TV sets is impressive. If not for the acting of both the veterans and the slightly experienced young actors/actresses, the show would have been ended earlier.

At first, the story was consistently good. But now that they're trying to prolong it, the show is on a dangerous route. But fans don't notice it at all so they're still safe.

2) One True Love
Who would expect that this 'filler' soap from GMA 7 would hit #1 eventually even just for a night? Despite the fact that it's a high-rating soap, Walang Hanggan was a show to beat. But because of the revelations on Thursday, more Pinoy viewers obviously wanted to see how good Raymond Bagatsing and Alden Richard's performances will be when they meet again, this time with Bagatsing's awareness that he's the dad to Soyti.

The show started good but not as engaging as Walang Hanggan, hence, the latter remains on top of the game. But script-wise, this soap deserves to be released as a novel. Kudos to the scriptwriters!

3) Luna Blanca
If not for Camille Prats' acting, this show would be gone. The two kids who played little Luna and Blanca did well but the script wasn't written to be that engaging. However, when it flipped to book two, the show gathered more viewers. Scenes improved to be more thrilling. All the more when the entry of Barbie Forteza as the impersonator came out. She proved to be an actress here in this role.

The major reason why it comes before the more popular Princess and I is because of its well-executed shots and well-thought concept.

4) Princess and I
Ask a lot of Kapamilya fans who love Walang Hanggan if they like the show that comes before it. Most of them would tell you that they don't. It's nothing against the script, the concept, the actors. It's just that Princess and I is more for young viewers and it fails in pleasing the older ones. But popularity-wise, Princess and I is a homerun!

For a time, we wondered why Daniel Padilla became a big name all of a sudden. When we watched it, we didn't wonder anymore. Not that he's a good actor. Not that he's a good singer. Not that he's the most handsome newcomer. Because in all those aspects, he has yet to work on them big time. But only because of his natural charisma! He should be thankful for it.

When we say quality, we're talking about the consistency of script, portrayal of characters, popularity, chemistry in all aspects, and convincing storyline even when all is fiction.

As an entry, we'll include TV5's Enchanted Garden in some of the categories for the sake of including all three major networks.

So as we go, let's pretend that weekend is going to be the Primetime Awards Night for the top four primetime soaps. Get your votes counted.

Is MTRCB's SPG rating really working? The Aftermath of Walang Hanggan's Rape Scene

With the latest buzz in Philippine television on the rape scene in Walang Hanggan topping the ratings, we question.

Walang Hanggan garnered a national TV rating of 38.7% by Kantar Media last August 1 for their episode that featured the rape scene between Nathan (Paulo Avelino) and Katerina (Julia Montes). The scene showed Paulo Avelino's character topless, sweating and devouring the still clothed body of Julia's character. It was not as explicit as the other rape scenes but the inuendos definitely led to the viewers' lucid imagination.

Here's the catch. Just before the said part of the show, the Kapamilya network warned the viewers with MTRCB's rating SPG (Strong Parental Guidance or Striktong Patnubay at Gabay). Despite the warning, the show still garnered a whopping 38.7%. That means that millions were able to watch it. To prove the point, the show even went trending on that night over Twitter world.

Reviewing the tweets, most of them came from students who were watching the said show. Students who are still living with their parents. Students who are supposed to be guarded by their parents.

Nothing is wrong with MTRCB's rating. Nothing is wrong with a show garnering such a high turnout of viewers for the said scene. But there are a few realities we can deduce (theoretically at least) from the results.

1. People liked Paulo Avelino's character going topless. SEX content.


2. Tweets were more of "Sana ako nalang ni-rape ni Nathan" than "kawawa si Katerina."


3. MTRCB ratings are just ratings, they don't have teeth.

For the third reality, we give the challenge back to the parents. As Winnie Monsood once said in her show at GMA News TV, it is still the responsibility of parents to watch over their kids and MTRCB is just a partner.

The Star That Struck Paulo Avelino

First seen in StarStruck: The Next Level, Paolo Avelino started to captivate just some viewers' hearts with his simple but promising looks.

Because he didn't win in the said talent search, his entry to showbiz became slow but gradually rising. Despite getting good roles in GMA 7 soaps, he wasn't getting the best projects. The network that discovered him also saw his acting potential so he was cast alongside Aljur Abrenica but only second to the said actor. This despite the fact that he's way better than Abrenica in the acting department.

This may have been the reason why he had to take another route. As 2012 began to unfold, Paolo Avelino began to see the star that shines brighter to him, he saw how Star Magic and ABS-CBN make big stars. It may have been the star that struck him.

He began having shows in ABS-CBN when he transferred. But the most remarkable to date is Walang Hanggan. For Kapamilya viewers, he was a revelation. For Kapuso followers, most of them knew what he had. But they also knew that he only needed a much bigger break. One that GMA 7 wasn't able to offer him. Because of that, the rival network grabbed this opportunity.

In no time Paolo Avelino became a hit. Not because of his looks, not because of his physique, but mainly because of his acting.

This ought to be a wake up call to GMA 7 Artist Center and the network as a whole. Consider how Avelino was in his former network. And consider him now just months after transferring, his name is now parallel to Coco Martin. Although not as big as the latter, but acting-wise, he's there.

Could it be that he was a big regret for GMA 7 that they released him?

Paolo Avelino, a star who sought for it and found it... Not in the network that discovered him, but in the new network that really FOUND him.
